Brandyn Cox formed BMC Accounting LLC while he was in his sophomore college year at the University of Toledo.
He attended college after separating from the Army in 2013 as a military police officer.
Active duty for 6 years with a tour to Afghanistan.
In His Words...
Upon returning home, I found it was very difficult to find a job that offered health insurance, which I needed since I was married and the wife’s job did not offer it.
I worked for a few companies, never making more than $10.00 per hour with less than 40 hour work weeks.
Money was tight and I was starting to feel the effects of finally coming home from the military.
I went to college about two months after separating and started out studying criminal justice.
I actually got all the way to the last call before graduation, when I took an elective business class.
I was so intrigued I decided to take an accounting course and fell in love.
After taking the lower level accounting courses I figured I would put my new education to the test.
I asked my neighbor who owned a landscaping company if I could keep his books for him and I would charge $200 for the year.
Quite a steal if you ask me, but I wanted the experience more than I wanted the money.
I actually did so well that I signed another client that was a coworker of mine who owned a charting boat tour business.
As tax season was near I decided I wanted to try taxes.
I formed BMC Accounting LLC that fall and registered with the IRS as a paid tax preparer.
I had fingerprints done, background check, and an application process to be able to electronically file my returns.
I built it all entirely through social media marketing and just going up randomly to people and talking to them about my business.
I ended up getting close to 100 customers my first year and filed over 300 returns.
I loved what I was doing and decided I can definitely do this for life.
At the time, I was still in school and went to a job fair to try to get hired by a CPA firm. I actually had an interview but was ultimately turned down.
This lit a fire inside of me and I decided to take my company virtual and National. Since then, I have retained clients in over a dozen states in over 20 different industries.
I’m finalizing my Enrolled Agent License with the IRS right now to have unlimited practice abilities before the IRS on all tax matters.
I expect to have my license in hand by January of 2019.
